We woke early so headed out to the airport for our flight to Dublin, Ireland. The light was delayed by over three quarters of an hour due to the industrial action in France still dominating air traffic. We had an Aer Lingus flight which was no frills but better than Ryan Air. Our flight got into Dublin about 1.00p.m and we got a taxi straight to the Kingfisher Quest House. This is an older, rather unusual style of accommodation but very central and all we needed for one night.
We left the hotel and walked through the old streets of Dublin passing old shops, churches and walking down very narrow streets with drab looking buildings.
We went through the Temple Bar area which is a hot stop for night entertainment.
There were lots of drinking places and pubs and is an area we had originally been booked in but decided it would probably be quite noisy.
We then looked at the very old stone Christ Church Cathedral which is beautifully maintained, in contrast to the Temple Area, which is so close.
Our aim was to find the Guinness Breweries which we had pre-paid tour tickets to visit. This a popular place for tourists to view the brewing on Guinness beer, a dark but very popular beer in Ireland. We eventually found the breweries and had an interest look through the 7 storied building, sampling the beer at one stage. Can't say I really liked it.
The brewery showed the history and progressions the Guinness storehouse storehouse has passed through over many years.
At the top of the building was a 360 degree lookout over the whole of Dublin so we were able to see many of the land marks and get a feel for the city.
After leaving the brewery many people were travelling back to the centre of Dublin by old fashioned wagons drawn by slow draft horses but Chris and decided to walk so we could explore some of the back streets. It was much colder in Dublin than any of the places we had been to so far so were placed to have our warm coats. We did manage to get lost but after asking directions we got our bearings again.
We crossed over one of the many bridges going from one side of Dublin to the other and eventually found our way back to the Kingfisher Guest house.
After a bit of a rest we went down to the restaurant which is part of the accommodation and I had lovely haddock fish with chips and salad and Chris had a rather large burger.
It was getting dark after dinner so we went for a walk to see Dublin by night and were surprised that we were just around the corner from O'Donnell Street. This a newer part of Dublin with lots of shops, action, bright lights and plenty to see. We could get a great view up and down the river with the bridges lit up. It looked very pretty in the drizzling rain.
After our early start from Spain we were getting tired so headed back to our room for an good night's sleep before picking up our hire car the next day.
